Creating and performing with Turkish art collective for the International Scenography Biennial .DE
I was invited to work with a Turkish arts collective as a guest artist in a special performance created for the International Scenography Biennial in Ludwigsberg DE. The event was a double bill of dance work, with 'On Air' and Excerpts of work by Eric Gauthier Dance Company.
I had a wonderful time on this project. I was excited to be finally having a look at something i had wanted to explore for sometime and this was the interaction between a performer on a vertical wall and a projection onto that surface. I have a real love for harness based aerial dance, especially on the wall and to create a performance for this kind of special event was an exciting challenge for me.
Due to some unforseen problems that the company had along the way we ended up with limited rehearsal time and a slightly late arrival in Stuttgart, I was amazed at how we pulled together and created our scratchy but still weighty 45 minutes of show. Apparently there was some stress around the project, i couldnt understand most of the conversations around logistics but when we got to working we were so efficiant. We played with Interaction between dancer and visuals, There was a beautiful scene where the ocean came down over the audience, Asli danced an excerpt from her piece 'Kontrol' and I closed the show with a solo on the wall, while the music and visuals were powerful throughout.
It was an inspiring collaboration. The production and rigging systems were designed by my friends Vertigo Flying Effects. Iv'e never felt in safer hands and as technicians they were exceptionally sensitive to the performance space. The Musicians were from Istanbul based rock band Gevende, for my part in the show i got soothing whale noises on the violin and glitchy sounds from synthesizers. As a dancer i was a guest of the Ciplak Ayaklar dance company and fellow performers Asli Ozturk and Melih Kirak. Visuals were created by Osman Koc of Nerdworking.
When i watch the piece we made I think of the ocean creating all life and the journey of man as he searches the universe for the secrets of the stars. There is a little teaser of that part of the show below :-)
